In colonial America, the money raised from lotteries was used to build canals, roads, colleges, libraries, and local militias during the French and Indian Wars.<\/p>\n
There were some skeptics, but the popularity of lotteries soon spread. By the mid-18th century, there were more than 200 lotteries operating in colonial America.<\/p>\n
